Paola Egonu tips the ball over the Cuneo block as she leads Conegliano to their hostoric 73rd win on the trot, Sunday evening in the Italian League.

Prosecco Doc Imoco Volley Conegliano went down in the history books Sunday evening when they twice came back from a set down to squeeze past Bosca S.Bernardo Cuneo 3-2 (22-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-18, 15-8) in Round 7 of the Italian women's league before some 3,000 home and travelling fans at Cuneo.

It was Conegliano's 73rd consecutive win across all seasons and competitions and it ties the Guinness World Record of Turkey's VakifBank Istanbul from 2012 to 2014.

Conegliano will now move to take sole ownership of the record, as they eye their 74th win, at home next weekend, against Delta Despar Trentino.

They have not lost since going down to Perugia on 12 December 2019.

Congeliano had already tied the all-time Italian league record of 72 consecutive wins held by the legendary Teodora Ravenna side between 1985 and 1987, when they shut out Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) in midweek action (in a Round 12 match brought forward).

But Conegliano were made to work hard for their achievement on Sunday.

Already trailing Cuneo by a set at the beginning of the match, Conegliano came from 12-14 behind in the second with an incredible 12-0 run to draw level.

It was another astonishing 6-0 from 8-7 up that decided the tie-break, as 18-year-old Georgia Frosini came on off the bench to apply the pressure from the service line.

A match high of 30 points by Paola Egonu was good to see Conegliano through, as the defending champions outblocked Cuneo 17 to 5.

With their win at Cuneo, Conegliano extended their record in this season's league to 8-0 and stand at the top of the standings on 21 points - but Igor Gorgonzola Novara are keeping up the chance, now trailing by four points with a match less.

Novara picked up their sixth win seven matches with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-20) sweep of Volley Bergamo on the road, Sunday night.
